Berkeley, CA — A groundbreaking ceremony on October 28, 2008, marked the start of construction of Fourth Street, a mixed-use, multi-family project in the historic University area of Berkeley. The $69.4 million project is being built by SCM Construction Management Services of Modesto, Calif., for Essex Property Trust of Palo Alto, Calif.

The project is situated on a two-acre site at Fourth Street and University Avenue. Designed by San Francisco architects Cristiani Johnson, the 171-unit complex will encompass retail shops and a podium parking structure. Fourth Street is scheduled for completion in early 2010.
